What is the Fair Housing Act?

Every person should have the opportunity to create a home that reflects who they are and what is important to them, regardless of race, national origin, color, sex or gender, disability, religion, or familial status.

Established in April 1968, the federal Fair Housing Act protects individuals from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities. The act and subsequent amendments specifically prohibit discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
